How to Apply a Rego/RUC Pouch to Your NZ Vehicle

Fitting your new Rego/RUC Pouch is pretty straightforward, but a little preparation makes a big difference. A clean, cool windscreen will help you get a smooth finish and give the adhesive the best chance to bond properly with the glass.

The most important thing to remember is to keep your new Rego Pouch away from sun and heat before, during and immediately after installation.

Once fitted, keep your vehicle out of direct sunlight or extreme heat for at least 60 minutes while the adhesive bonds with the glass.

And one big one: never store your new Rego Pouch in the glovebox.

 

What You’ll Need

Before you get started, it’s handy to have:

• Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
• Paper towels or a clean cloth
• A few small pieces of masking tape if you want help positioning the pouch
• A small squeegee if you have one, although your fingers will work just fine

Step 1: Store Your Rego Pouch Somewhere Cool

If you’re not installing your new Rego Pouch straight away, store it flat in a cool, dry place.

Keep it away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Don’t leave it in your glovebox. The inside of a parked vehicle can get extremely hot, which isn’t where you want your new pouch sitting before installation.

Step 2: Clean Your Windscreen

Remove your old rego holder and thoroughly clean the area of glass where your new pouch will be fitted.

Make sure you remove any leftover adhesive, residue, dust, grease or fingerprints.

For best results, we recommend isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). It’s particularly useful for cutting through old adhesive and greasy marks.

Dry the glass thoroughly with a paper towel or clean cloth before moving on.

The cleaner the glass, the better the adhesive can bond to it.

Step 3: Make Sure the Glass and Interior Are Cool

Before installing your pouch, make sure both your windscreen and the inside of your vehicle are nice and cool.

If your vehicle has been sitting in direct sunlight, give it plenty of time to cool down first.

Morning is often a good time to fit your new pouch, or wait until your vehicle has been parked out of direct sunlight for a while.

Don’t rush this step. Keeping everything cool before and during installation is important.

Step 4: Get the Position Right

Before removing the backing paper, work out exactly where you want your new Rego Pouch to sit.

A few small pieces of masking tape can be placed on the windscreen to act as guides. This makes it much easier to line everything up before the adhesive touches the glass.

Once you’re happy with the position, you’re ready to start sticking.

Step 5: Peel the Backing

Peel back just a small section of the backing paper to expose one edge of the adhesive.

Don’t remove all of the backing paper at once.

Leaving most of it in place gives you much more control over the installation and helps prevent the pouch from sticking to the glass before you’re ready.

Step 6: Install the Pouch

Line up the exposed adhesive edge with the position you’ve chosen on the windscreen.

Once you’re happy with it, press that edge firmly against the glass to hold the pouch in position.

Slowly peel away more of the backing paper while pressing the pouch onto the glass as you go.

Work gradually rather than trying to stick the whole pouch down at once. This will make it easier to keep everything straight and minimise trapped air bubbles.

Step 7: Press Out Any Air Bubbles

Once the entire pouch is attached to the windscreen, check for any air bubbles underneath it.

Starting from the centre, use firm pressure with your fingers or a small squeegee to push the bubbles towards the outer edges.

Take your time and make sure the pouch is firmly pressed against the glass.

Step 8: Give the Adhesive Time to Bond

You’re nearly done.

After installation, keep your vehicle out of direct sunlight and extreme heat for at least 60 minutes.

This gives the adhesive time to properly bond with the windscreen.

Once that hour is up, your new Rego/RUC Pouch is ready to go.

 

Handy Tip: Getting Your Rego Card Out

Your rego card can sometimes sit quite snugly inside the pouch, especially when it’s new.

If you’re having trouble getting hold of it, there’s an easy trick.

Slide a pair of tweezers, a pen or another thin, solid object down behind the top of the rego card. Gently press towards the windscreen while pulling the card out.

This helps separate the card from the pouch and makes it much easier to remove when it’s time to replace your rego.

Avoid using anything sharp that could damage the pouch or scratch your windscreen.

A Few Things to Remember

Keep it cool. Keep your new pouch away from sun and heat before installation, while you’re fitting it, and for at least 60 minutes afterwards.

Never store it in your glovebox. Store your pouch flat somewhere cool and dry until you’re ready to fit it.

Start with clean glass. Old adhesive, grease, dirt and fingerprints can all get in the way of a good bond.

Don’t peel all the backing off at once. Expose one edge first, get the pouch positioned, then gradually peel and press as you go.

Take your time with air bubbles. Work from the centre towards the outside edges to push them out.
